Earlier this year, he pledged to run 12 marathons, in 12 months, for £12,000.
And now with over half of his extreme challenge and target complete, Colne teacher Simon Atkin is showing no signs of slowing down.
The Fisher More RC High School head of PE will be spending New Year’s Day running the Liverpool Marathon, and has other treks lined up in Osmotherly and London.
And if that wasn’t enough, he has also been carrying out a number of other physically demanding ventures, including triathlons and the Great North Swim.
The father-of-two, who lives in Clayton-le-Moors, Accrington, said: “I have unwittingly picked some of the toughest marathons to complete during this challenge, not through want, but because they are either local or fit into my monthly programme.
“This challenge would not be possible to do without the amazing support of my family, friends, staff and students of Fisher More.
“I would also be nowhere near my target if it wasn’t for so, so many people also setting personal challenges - please see www.virginmoneygiving.com/ourchallenges for a full list.”
Mr Atkin’s efforts are all motivated by a cause extremely close to his heart.
All money raised will go towards sponsoring a nurse for the children’s Cystic Fibrosis ward at Leeds General Infirmary, where his younger brother Andrew Langthorne has been a patient for the past 17 years.
With the support of family and friends, he has currently collected £7,000.
He is set to finish the challenge in May next year.
