Rooms gutted in ‘suspicious’ Nelson house fire

A fire which gutted two ground floor rooms at an unoccupied house in Nelson is thought to have been started deliberately.

Crews from Nelson and Burnley were called to the house in Ripon Street at 3-30am today (Friday) and found the rear of the house well alight.

It is thought the fire had been burning for around an hour before they arrived on the scene.

Firefighters spent an hour and a half using four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reels and two ventilation units to tackle the blaze, which destroyed a kitchen and rear living room and caused severe heat and smoke damage to the rest of the house.
