Almost £2m. is to be spent in the next 12 months to improve roads across Pendle, Lancashire County Council has revealed.
The programme will include making road surfaces better, boosting bridges, improving some paths and street lights and making it safer to cross a road.
Some 40 different schemes will be carried out throughout Pendle.
County Coun. John Fillis, the county’s cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “At a time when we are seeing unprecedented Government cuts made to our budget and local economy in Lancashire, it is more important than ever to ensure we are working to improve the lives of ordinary people in our county and the communities in which they live.
“Our Highways and Transport network are the veins that keep the heart of Lancashire pumping, whether its work, education, family or social mobility it’s important and we are making a clear commitment to maintain and improve these life lines.”
Nelson South county councillor and Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Pendle Coun. Azhar Ali said: “I know the condition of our roads, footpaths and cycle ways are key priorities for residents in our area and we have secured nearly £2m. through the Capital Programme to maintain and improve these over the next year.”
Key roads involved are Lancashire Moor Road, going up the Pennines from Laneshaw Bridge; Skipton Road, Colne; Junction 12 of the M65 at Brierfield; and Clitheroe Road, Brierfield.
Work is also planned on unclassified urban streets and roads in Nelson, Barrowford, Barnoldswick, and Reedley, plus surface dressing to rural roads.
Footways in Colne, Nelson and Barnoldswick will be improved, and there will be Local Priorities Response Fund schemes in Nelson, Brierfield and West Craven.
Some lighting columns will be replaced around Pendle, and there is flood risk management and drainage in areas of Brierfield, Earby and Barnoldswick.
Plans for improvements totalling almost £400,000 to bridges around the borough are also planned along with a new zebra crossing at Every Street by Pendle Street in Nelson.
