Canal drained after bank collapses

Part of the canal and towpath running through Burnley have been closed, and the canal drained, after a wall collapsed into it following heavy rainfall.

The small stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal has been closed between Sandygate and the Kitchens garage area near to Trafalgar Street to allow engineers on site to secure and repair the wall.

Work is expected to last four weeks, however, the towpath may be open sooner.

Mike Cook, Burnley Council’s director of economic regeneration, said: “This is a very old historic area and the recent spell of heavy rain seems to have weakened this area of wall.

“We are working closely with engineers from the Canal and River Trust and the Environment Agency to assess and repair the wall.

“We are committed to ongoing investment in the Weavers’ Triangle to breathe life back in to this area of unique industrial heritage.”
