Just over a year since it opened, a Nelson chippy has been named a runner up in North-West fish and chip awards.

Market Street Chippy – which is actually on Cross Street – recently celebrated its first birthday and offered fish and chips for just £1 that day. And that brought loads of customers along – they sold nearly 1,000!

But it has now been given a runner up honour by the Potato Council’s Chip Week North West Awards, signed by “The Potato Girls”, shortly after its birthday.

Owner Mr Amer Ansar said: “We were delighted and surprised – even they were surprised to hear we’d only been open for 13 months.

“It was a nice surprise. We work really hard as a team.”

And Mr Ansar added: “One of the factors that have contributed to our success is our delivery service.

“We are the first chippy to offer free home deliveries between 11-30 and 8pm on Monday to Saturday and 1pm until 8pm on Sunday. ”

And the chippy’s manager Claire Mullins was also delighted when she found out they were runners up for the North-West.

The fish and chip shop was named after one of Nelson’s past chippies, which was actually on Market Street but was demolished to make room for Number One Market Street.

And Holt’s Fish and Chips on Scotland Road has also been honoured, winning national and local awards. And others are popular, too.
