A dance band with over 60 years experience is encouraging more Pendle residents to take part in what is fast becoming a dying tradition.
The Mark Kitto Band, who celebrated their diamond anniversary last year, are hopeful that plenty of pairs will “come dancing” to their April social event.
Guests of all ages will be given the chance to tango, waltz, and quickstep as a diverse selection of music is played by Mr Kitto, on flute and saxophone, Gordon Toole, on drums, Malcolm Bateson, on bass guitar, and Peter Elmer, on keyboard. Requests will also be taken.
The event will be held at Rolls-Royce Leisure Centre, in Barnoldswick, on Friday, April 11th, from 8pm to 11-30pm. Priced at £7 on the door, “Come Dancing” will also include a raffle and bar snacks.
Former plumber Mr Kitto (77), of Oxford Street, Colne, said: “It is a dying tradition, and we are hoping to give it a little bit of a boost. Ballrooms keep closing, which is sad, but we are trying to bring a bit of it back.
“It is all up in the air at the moment, but if it goes well we might do it more regularly.
Mark Kitto’s band began back in 1953, when it was better known as “The Teenagers”. Later it became “The Harmonisers”, before finally becoming “The Mark Kitto Band”.
Musicians have changed over the years, but the band in its various forms has played in ballrooms throughout both Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Favourite venues included the Nelson Imperial Ballroom, Colne’s Tower Ballroom and Brierfield’s Briar Ballroom.
