A drunken man who walked into Nelson Police Station wielding a stick and threatened a PCSO has been given a community order.
Kieron Rayson (43), of Poplar Street, Nelson, appeared at Burnley Crown Court. He had pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and using threatening behaviour at the town’s magistrates court in January but the case was sent to the higher court for sentence.
He was given a six-month community order with six months’ supervision by judge Beverly Lunt.
The court heard Rayson was heavily intoxicated at 5-10pm on December 4th last year. A PCSO had returned to the police station from duty. As she walked past Rayson he was waving his arms around and shouting the words “stab” and “knife.” She walked into the inquiry office and noticed the defendant had a broken stick up his sleeve. When he continued to shout, he was arrested by two officers.
The defendant was taken to custody but because of his intoxicated state he could not offer police an explanation for his actions.
He told officers he had been drinking and thought he may have been assaulted but could not be sure. The court heard he had a black eye.
He was shown the piece of wood but could not remember where it had come from and apologised for shouting at the PCSO.
The court was told Rayson had managed to keep out of trouble since 1998 and was taking large amounts of medication.
Sentencing Rayson, Judge Lunt said: “It is not a made weapon in any way, shape or form. You are on a lot of medication which mixed with a small amount of alcohol leads to the scenario we have before the court today.
“I’ve no idea what was going through your head that day in the police station.
“I can see you’ve got health problems. It’s a problem because you get very drunk and then behave in this ridiculous way.”
