Plans to open a new store in Barrowford have been given an approval by Pendle Council in terms of an alcohol selling licence.
Despite opposition from local businesses, Morrisons have been given approval for their M Local store on Gisburn Road, close to the Spar Store and on the site of an old petrol station.
During a meeting at Nelson Town Hall earlier this week, which the opposers attended, Morrisons obtained the alcohol premises license for their proposed fairly-small store.
Mr Gez Threadgould, from the Spar store, was very much involved in opposition to the proposal. He said: “Myself and several other local business people and residents attended the meeting at which we presented a petition with over 200 names on it – gathered in just one week – together with 49 representations of objection.
“The council passed the license anyway – now alcohol could be sold from that establishment from 6am to midnight seven days per week. Incidentally, the site is adjoining sheltered housing populated by the elderly.
“We are now trying to oppose the remaining planning steps which include a request to be able to deliver 6am to midnight seven days per week.”
Despite the concern of quite a lot of people in Barrowford, it looks like the small store will go ahead.
