A fascinating book reflecting on the history of a local hamlet is set to be officially launched next week.
Written by local historian Sarah Greenwood, “A Brief History of Cottontree and the Wesleyan Methodist Church” will be unveiled at LBS Garden Centre, in Cotton Tree Lane, from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday.
The work, which is filled with facts, pictures and a poem by Mrs Greenwood’s husband Jack, was inspired when the methodist church shut its doors in October 2010 due to excessive costs.
And while services are still held at Trawden Community Centre from 10-30am every Sunday, Mrs Greenwood admits that the closure of the 117-year-old building was a sad occasion for residents.
She hopes that her book, which looks at everything from weddings to buildings to royal celebrations, will provide an insight into what life used to be like in Cottontree and “keep history alive”.
The former weaver, who attended Colne Park High School, said: “I have condensed it as much as possible, and have tried to make it as interesting as possible for the people of Cottontree.
“I am looking forward to launching it - it is nice when you do something and you can see the fruition of it.”
Mrs Greenwood would also like to thank her dear friend Gillian Greenwood for helping her during the project.
