The Lynx effect proved irresistible for a persistent shoplifter.

Blackburn magistrates heard Jason Dewhirst had been caught stealing from the Boots store in Nelson on 12 occasions.

On nearly every occasion, he stole Lynx.

Despite being banned from the store, he returned on March 5th and was filling a bag with cans of Lynx when he was challenged by the store manager.

Dewhirst (38), of Highgate, Nelson, pleaded guilty to stealing 10 cans of Lynx worth £35 and stealing groceries from a shop in Accrington.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months, made subject to community supervision for 12 months with a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement and ordered to pay £120 compensation and costs.

Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting) said: “The store manager has known him over the last four years as a repeat shoplifter,” said Miss Allan.

“He always targets the men’s aisle, usually steals Lynx and that is exactly what he did on this occasion.”

Mr Jonathan Taylor (defending) said Dewhirst had a problem with heroin addiction.

“The reason he targets men’s deodorant is that it is easy to sell and raises money very quickly,” he said.
