Spring has arrived in Pendle, with bright floral displays across the area.
Our photographer Andrew Smith was on hand to capture the season of new life in Pendle’s popular Victoria Park
The Green Flag award-winning park, which straddles Nelson and Barrowford, boasts a large lake, bandstand, bowling green, health walk routes, MUGA and a children’s play area.
Victoria Park dates back to a time when it was a corn mill in the 18th Century, with the pond, sunken garden and sump hole part of the diverted river system that fed the mill on the site. The first 14 acres of the park were bought in 1875, with a further 20 acres bought from Thomas Edward Every Clayton in 1886.
The bandstand was erected at its current site at the turn of the century, and the bowling greens arrived in 1903.
Several monuments have been placed in Victoria Park and then later moved, the most recent being a Boy Scouts Statue which has been relocated to Nelson Town Centre which was originally erected to commemorate the young men of the Scouts’ movement who died in the First World War.
