Determined members of Colne Cricket Club are urging Pendle residents to support them in their first home game of the season.
The Byron Road clubhouse is currently the focus of a “Save Our Ground” campaign, after it was revealed last month that it is under threat. £100,000 needs to be found by the end of the year, to prevent the Lancashire League’s oldest club from shutting its doors.
Now County Coun. Paul White and player Joel Duerden are hopeful that as many residents as possible “will come down this Sunday and cheer on the team.”
The team played away at Todmorden last weekend where they secured a shock victory, and are hoping for a repeat this weekend at the Horsfield when they face Rishton.
County Coun. White said: “We’ve said all along that saving this club will take the effort of the whole town, and the first opportunity of the season to show that spirit is this Sunday.
“The support we’ve seen from other clubs, who are donating their takings to save us, has been phenomenal. This weekend is our first chance to show those other clubs what a determined bunch we are in Colne”.
And Mr Duerden added: “Last year we won one match all season, and we’ve already equalled that on our first outing this year. Everyone is really buoyed up by last weekend’s win. There is a really determined atmosphere at the Club at the moment, and we want the whole town to get behind us”.
Wickets will be pitched at 1pm. Entry to the ground is £4, with all money being put towards the campaign.
The bar will be open and food will be served in the Tea Rooms.
