A 10-strong team of firefighters rescued a horse which became stuck in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Barnoldswick this afternoon.
Two fire engines attended the scene off Greenberfield Lane to rescue the stricken animal after a call came in at 1-08pm.
Three firefighters trained for swift water rescues were in the canal and managed to shepherd the horse 100 metres along the water to waiting crew members on the bank.
There, the horse was harnessed, and lifted to safety in a 90-minute operation before it trotted off into the field from which it had escaped.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “The horse wasn’t really in distress. It was swimming up and down the canal but at that point it is lined with corrugated metal and it couldn’t get out.
“It clearly would have tired so we are pleased to have the desired result and it has come to no harm.”
