Come on England! This is the cry from a close-knit Colne community who have gone to extra lengths to show their commitment to this year’s FIFA World Cup.

Neighbours in Salisbury Street have kicked off their experience of the football competition in style, decorating their road with bunting and flags.

The brainwave came from resident Lynn Hurst, who has lived in the street for the past 20 years.

The night care assistant (55) said: “We wanted to give England a bit of support. “We’ve put flags up all across the bedroom windows - it looks really good.

“We are hoping to do a street party if they are successful.”

The FIFA World Cup launched on Thursday night with a game against Brazil, who are hosting this year’s tournament, and Croatia. England play their first match today, where they will be challenging Italy. You can tweet us your pictures of World Cup celebrations at @pendlenews
