An award-winning adult choir is on the lookout for sensational sopranos to help do justice to six short-listed compositions.

Local mixed voice choir KVU Singers will be performing new songs by some of the UK’s best young composers at FinaL6, the grand final concert of the Jessica Foxley Young Choral Composer Competition.

The new contest is being run by Jessica Foxley Music Projects, which was set up after the death of Jessica in 2009. The Pendle Hippodrome star was killed in a car crash, along with her boyfriend Tom Petty and their friend Philip Wright.

The competition saw entries from 32 composers under the age of 25 which were judged by composers Alan Bullard and Jonathan Brigg, President of KVU Singers Paul Whittaker OBE and former KVU Singers member and mum to Jessica, Margaret Foxley.

Jessica’s dad and choir member Paul said: “Our choir has some great new music to perform as a result of this competition but we are feeling the draught in our soprano section at the moment with three of our singers leaving due to relocation or other commitments.

“We want to put on an exceptional performance to do justice to these compositions so we are looking to recruit three new sopranos.

“Anyone over 15 who thinks they might be interested in joining KVU Singers can come along for a few rehearsals before making up their mind.

“We are a friendly lot, not at all like the stuffy stereotype of some adult choirs.”

And musical director of KVU Singers Frank Smith added: “This would be an excellent time to join our choir as we are just starting to learn the six short-listed pieces from our Young Choral Composer Competition.

“New members will also be able to join us on our Scottish tour in May 2015. The choir’s visits to Budapest, Holland, Belgium and Ireland in recent years have all been very memorable experiences.”

FinaL6, which is offering free tickets to anyone under 18, will take place at The Muni, in Colne, from 3pm on Sunday, November 2nd. It will include performances from young soloists Samantha Oxborough (Mezzo) and Thom Hardaker (Accordian).

Competition finalists in the Under 19s category are Joe Davies, from Rugby, Fergus Hall, from Glasgow, and Douglas McIntosh from Stafford. And finalists in the 19-25s category are Sarah Loughridge, from Ballymena, Owain Park, from Cambridge, and Samuel Wilson, from London.
