An Earby mother has urged people to support a new charity store which opened up in Barnoldswick in May helping those living with a painful genetic skin complaint.
Elaine Eley, of Alder Hill Croft, has praised the charity DEBRA for their work in raising awareness of the rare condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) for which there is no known cure at present.
Mrs Eley’s son Scott died aged 16 in March 2011 after bravely battling the disease on a daily basis from birth. The former Kelbrook Primary School and Park High School pupil suffered constant pain with fragile skin that would blister at the slightest touch.
DEBRA opened up in Newtown in Barnoldswick last month and Mrs Eley was one of the first to sign up to be a volunteer as she officially opened up the shop.
Mrs Eley said: “DEBRA provided a lot of assistance to Scott and they have supported us a lot as a family. They help fund a nursing service and a lot of research in to the condition.
“EB is one of the worst conditions I have ever known. It’s hard to see your child in constant pain all over.
“Over the years the family has fund-raised and Scott’s former schools in Kelbrook and Colne have been very good. It’s not a well known charity but it does some great work and to have a shop open locally raising awareness of EB is brilliant really.”
The DEBRA store will specialise in selling good quality furniture and other large items as well as a selection of clothes, books, toys and CDs.
Unwanted items including furniture, electrical items, clothing, shoes, handbags, bric-a-brac, books, CDs and DVDs are welcome and a free collection service is offered for furniture items that are being donated.
