Salterforth teen sees flower power as her future

A budding teen Salterforth entrepreneur is hoping her business will flower as she lays down roots with a first shop.

Megan Sunley (18), of Moor View, is to open a florists in Craven Court, Skipton, on Tuesday just weeks after completing her floristry course at Craven College.

The seeds of Megan’s business Lotus Flowers Floral Designs were sown at Barnoldswick Market in September and more recently at Gisburn Farmers’ Market. The jump to a shop has stemmed from seeing that burgeoning business flourish.

And with a weekend of frantic shop-fitting and painting before opening up to the public, Megan can’t wait to get started.

Megan said: “I just decided it’s what I wanted to do from school really. It’s going to be flowers for all occasions, weddings, funerals and gifts. It’s something I really enjoy doing.”

And Megan hopes petal power will see her career bloom further.

She added: “I’m just hoping I can succeed, progress into a bigger shop at some point and maybe on to a chain down the line. I’ve achieved everything I have wanted to so far, so why not?”

The former West Craven High Technology College pupil’s talents have been evident for a while according to proud mum Eloise, who also saw her son Morgan take the plunge setting up his own arboricultural business at a similar age.

Megan’s skills have been recognised in some quarters already with a nomination for a Skipton Rotary Club award and achieving the prestigious Level Three RHS floristry qualification at such an early age.

Eloise said: “She’s always been into nature ever since she was little and she was very good at art at school.

“Megan has done a couple of weddings and funerals from being based at the stall and we were up until midnight in the run up to Christmas doing 200 wreaths for local garden centres. I’m extremely proud.”
