The RSPCA is investigating the death of a number of cats in the Manor Street area of Nelson from suspected antifreeze poisoning.

A spokesman for the charity said there was evidence to suggest this was being done deliberately – and warned pet owners to be on their guard in the future.

“Owners should be vigilant and contact a vet immediately if they think their cat may have been in contact with the chemical,” said the RSPCA spokesman.

Anyone convicted of deliberately poisoning cats in this way faces a jail term of up to six months and could also be fined up to £20,000.

The spokesman said: “It is seen as one of the most serious offences that we deal with under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and will not be tolerated.”

Anyone with any information regarding the spate of Nelson poisonings is asked to call 0300 1234 999 and ask for Inspector Booker.
