A secondary school student had to be rescued from the overflow section of a Nelson reservoir last night.

The girl, who was said to be with two friends, got into difficulty at Walverden Reservoir at 7-45pm.

According to crew manager Dave Robinson who attended the scene, the trio had put themselves in a “very vulnerable position”.

A triple extension ladder was needed to gain access to the overflow, where firefighters could get the casualty and her friends to a place of safety.

The rescue comes in the same week that popular Colne teenager James Goodship (17) drowned in water at Lake Burwain.

And now watch manager Neil Hardiman has reiterated the importance of remaining aware of the dangers of open water.

He added that the only safe place to swim is in a swimming pool where the water is clean, safe and warm, and where there are lifeguards on hand.

Mr Hardiman said: “I would strongly reaffirm the dangers of being in and around open water, especially in warm weather where there is a false sense of security.

“Over the last few weeks we have been visiting local places identified as being dangerous, including this one, putting signage up.”
