Organisers of an upcoming Colne event to commemorate the First World War centenary are on the lookout for youngsters who can be mascots on the day.

Colne Commemorates 1914 will be held on August 2nd, and is expected to be one of the biggest events held in the town in recent years.

It will include a reconstruction of a trench in the orchestra pit of Pendle Hippodrome, a short service at the war memorial at 11am and the opening of an exhibition on Colne in World War One at the library.

And while Colne Town Councils say it is not ready to reveal all its ideas just yet, it is seeking children, ideally aged between six and eight, to take part in the recreation of a period photographic studio.

Events Committee chairman Coun. Dorothy Lord said: “Photography was in its infancy, but extraordinarily popular.

“Most men going off to war had their portraits taken and we’ve discovered that many chose to include a lucky mascot in the form a child in uniform.

“So we have time to costume our mascots up, we are looking for our mascots now.”

As well as mascots, the town council events committee is also asking for volunteers of all ages to help with the commemoration event.

Marshals for a parade at 9-45am, guides, interpreters and anyone who has a story about their family or memorabilia that can be borrowed or copied are also asked to step forward.

Coun. Lord added: “We are thrilled with some of the ideas we have planned for August 2nd, but we aren’t going to reveal them all just yet.

“We want Colne to mark a century since the outbreak of the First World War in truly unique style. Everyone should put this date in their diaries now, as we want the whole town to come together, just as it did a century ago.”
