Nelson-based charity’s emergency appeal for Gaza

After a whole series of tragedies in Gaza, the Nelson-based charity Muslim Global Relief is aiding the community there.

It has held a brief on the situation in Gaza – due to the conflict with Israel – and its emergency appeal can help to deliver aid on the ground there.

Mr Muhammad F. Bashir, head of Marketing and Income Generation at MGR, said: “More than 1,200 people in Gaza have been killed – mainly women and children. Over 100,000 people are now sheltering in UN facilities. Thousands of others have moved to stay with friends or relatives.”

And he added: “Whole areas in the east of Gaza City have all but emptied, with families moving into the centre of the city to avoid the shelling. Al-Shifa hospital, too, has become an unofficial shelter for the displaced.

“People not only lack money, but also security and personal safety is also of great importance. Yet, with the borders with Egypt and Israel still closed due to a seven-year blockade on Gaza, the enclave remains effectively sealed off.

“Many Palestinians are saying: ‘There is no safe place in Gaza’.”

MGR raised a sum of £2,086.06 at its Nelson town centre collection recently for the people of Gaza and these funds, in combination with funds raised during their campaign, is providing some relief to the people out there.

Mr Bashir said: “More funds are urgently needed, so please donate.”
