Members of a Foulridge sailing club who were taking part in an international event when a “major rescue effort” was launched are said to be safe and well.
A Burwain Sailing Club spokesman has confirmed that members Ian Dobson, James Dewhurst and Patrick Hamilton, as well as former member Andy Tunnicliffe, “are perfectly fine with no injuries” following the incident at the GP14 world championship in Northern Ireland yesterday.
A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey and two police helicopters were rushed to the scene along with at least two RNLI lifeboats when sailing dinghies were hit by a sudden squall. Ten sailors were said to be injured, and two competitors were taken to hospital with apparent minor injuries.
Mr Dobson and Mr Tunnicliffe won the first race of the championship, with Mr Dewhurst and Mr Hamilton coming in 18th. They will be be participating in the event for the rest of the week,
