Former Nelson police dies aged 86

A Nelson-born man who became a chief inspector in the police has died at the age of 86.

Raymond Cayley, who was born in the town in 1927 and attended Leeds Road Elementary School and Nelson Grammar School, joined the police after working in the cotton industry and serving in the Fleet Air Arm, working for much of his career in Bury.

Mr Cayley was one of three brothers – Terence, who died in 1995, and Granville, who lives in West Sussex.

The family lived in Marlin Street, \nelson, in a house built by his maternal grandfather at the beginning ofg the 20th Century.

He was a gifted artist and furniture maker who spent more than 30 years creating his own designs and restoring antique furniture.

He is survcived by his son, Glen.

The funeral was held at Radcliffe Crematorium, Bury.
