Pendle charity shows support following blaze at Manchester Dogs’ Home

Selfless volunteers at a Pendle animal welfare charity have offered to take in dogs rescued from a “soul-destroying” blaze at Manchester Dogs’ Home.

Staff at Pendle Dogs in Need have managed to clear up eight spaces following the tragedy, in Harpurhey, last night.

The lives of at least 60 animals have been claimed, but the 150 dogs saved have been moved across to Cheshire Dogs’ Home.

Now Paula Knowles, from Pendle Dogs In Need, has said she and her team will do anything they can to help, and is waiting to hear whether they can take in any of the rescued pups.

She said: “We have offered about eight spaces in case they need us.

“Just watching it all last night was absolutely horrendous - it’s soul-destroying.

“We have contacted them and told them that we are here if they need us.

“We will do whatever is needed.”

Following the fire, a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

A JustGiving account set up last night has already raised well over £500,000, with more than 50,000 donations being made.

Throughout Colne, other residents and businesses have been showing their support, with Stanley House Veterinary Surgery writing on Facebook: “We are shocked and saddened to hear the terrible news overnight of the Manchester & Cheshire Dogs’ Home.

“Our thoughts are with all the animals, staff and supporters who are having to deal with this tragedy in extremely difficult circumstances. There is a Justgiving page that has been set up to raise funds... and we urge people to support.”

A Manchester Dogs’ Home spokesman said: “Due to the tragic event at our Manchester Kennels we are asking people not to telephone Manchester Dogs’ Home as all of our lines are down due to the fire.

“The access to the home is restricted to necessary personnel so visitors are asked to please refrain from calling in person till further notice. We are extremely grateful for the help and support from the community and well-wishers.”
