A 64-year-old man remains in police custody on suspicion of murder after a 47-year-old woman was found dead on a barge in Salterforth this morning.
Police were called out at 8am on Friday to an unnamed blue boat moored close to the Anchor Inn on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
The woman’s body was removed from the scene at approximately 3-15pm and her death is still being treated as unexplained.
Police have said they hope to know more on a cause of death following a post mortem, but have not ruled out alcohol.
A man who didn’t want to be named said: “I saw him a few times but I never saw her.
“I think the boat is without an engine and was towed up from Lower Park Marina. I think that would be about three or four months ago, something like that.”
A woman, who also wanted to remain anonymous, added: “The boat arrived there at the beginning of the summer and has never moved. I’ve seen her once in about four months.
“I’ve said hello to him once and he did say hello back but that’s the extent of my conversation with him.”
