Salterforth Primary School pupils are preparing to map the village as a £43,000 heritage project enters its centrepiece phase.
Ceramic artist Vivien Booth has been working with children and members of the public who are involved in the scheme on perfecting their etching techniques before they begin producing a huge ceramic map this month.
The map will be pieced together at the finish and the view of Salterforth will be based on an aerial photograph the “Putting Salterforth on the Map” project recently had commissioned.
Project leader Rachael Brennan said: “It was a chance to make a plaque with their name or house number on it and to practise skills before we start the map in November.
“It’s going really well and everybody enjoyed it. We’ve four or five members of the community coming in as well which I’m delighted about.
“It’s amazing, the children love it and are really getting to grips with it. They keep telling us facts about Salterforth and the aerial photographs have fascinated them.”
Meanwhile, the heritage group’s Facebook page continues to attract new postings and appeals for information on Salterforth’s history, and has become a real online hub.
These stories include the Ginny Well and the 1950s school children who carved their names into a tree in Cross Lane, plus much more.
The project is scheduled to finish in July next year. To visit the Facebook page, log on to the website and enter “Salterforth Heritage” into the search box.
