Pendle residents on benefits to get new ‘Get Active’ leisure pass

PENDLE Council’s Executive has given the green light to re-launch a scheme aimed at increasing accessibility to leisure facilities.

The newly-named “Get Active” pass gives all day, every day, reduced price admission to many of Pendle’s leisure facilities for residents on benefits.

It is part of the council’s leisure strategy called “On The Move and Active in Pendle”, to get more people of all ages involved in sport and physical leisure activities.

The new recreation passport will be launched in January after the council joined forces with Pendle Leisure Trust and its success will be reviewed after six months.

Another feature of the new pass is that it also offers discounted entry to dependants, something which wasn’t available with the previous recreation passport.

At the meeting of the Executive, Coun. Jonathan Eyre described it as a “very good scheme” adding it would help to eradicate inequalities across the borough.

Prior to the meeting, Paul Hussey, Pendle Council’s Head of Policy, said: “Feedback was generally in favour of the new scheme.

“Residents welcomed the fact the scheme now includes children and there are no longer restricted times in place.

“But it did highlight that those who have a disability, and are encouraged for medical reasons to take regular exercise, may be unfairly affected by the introduction of charges.”

The new pass can be used at Pendle’s three leisure centres for their pools, gym and exercise and fitness classes.

It also provides discounted entry to Seedhill Athletics and Fitness Centre and Marsden Park Golf Course at certain times of the day and cardholders can have free games of tennis and bowls at all Pendle Council’s parks where the facilities are available.
