Improvements at Colne nursery school

IMPROVEMENTS have been made at a Colne nursery school, an Ofsted report has shown.

In its latest inspection, Newtown Nursery School, in Newtown Street, was rated as “good” by inspectors. This compares to a “satisfactory” rating on its last inspection.

Key findings revealed that children achieve well at the nursery, and make good progress in all areas of learning, and that children cooperate well with teachers and teaching assistants who support their social and emotional skills well.

The school was also praised for making good use of the classroom and outdoor areas, and for its regular programme of checking the quality of teaching.

It is not yet said to be an outstanding school for reasons including that children do not have enough opportunities to practice letters and sounds during small group sessions, and because adults’ questioning of children is not always sharp enough to help improve their learning.

Inspectors observed three teachers during their visit, looked at children’s work and examined a range of the school’s documentation.
