Scout group launched by Trawden parents

DEVOTED parents have joined forces to form a new Scout troop.

Previously, local youngsters making the transition from Cubs to Scouts were being forced to travel away from their group at Sacred Heart Church to other troops in Trawden or Barnoldswick.

But now, thanks to volunteers Laura O’Callaghan, Warren Manley, Kirsty Swierkowski and John Manley, those aged between 10-and-a-half and 14 who want to continue scouting can remain at the Queen Street site.

Nine Scouts have already been invested and members of the 16th Pendle Sacred Heart Cub Scout Group are now hoping that more budding adventurers will get on board and learn how to “Be Prepared”.

Laura (25), mum to Jack (8), and a volunteer at The Titanic in Lancashire Museum, said: “We think it’s going really well so far.The kids all love it — they are quite proud.

“We could not have started the troop without the help we received from Howard Mitchell — the group Scout leader. He came to every meeting for the first few weeks and helped us to find our feet . As we have none of our own equipment yet he also provided this.”

So far the group have been having plenty of fun, and have been working hard towards their badges, including astronomy.

They have been on an adventure day at Bowley Scout Camp, where they did raft building, orienteering and camp fire cooking, they went on a weekend camp at Great Towers in the Lake District and they also attended the Remembrance Parade in Nelson’s town centre.

Lots more camps and activities, including a 22 mile walk, are being planned.
