Fancy dress walk in aid of grieving ex-Barnoldswick mother

An emotional charity walk will take place this weekend in aid of a former Barlicker who tragically lost her prematurely born son.

Leanne Steinberger (née Fancy) and her husband Michael lost their son Daniel after nine days when he was born at 1lb 10oz three-and-a-half-months early on November 28th, 2013.

Leanne, who married in 2010 and lives in California with Michael, lost her job as a nanny weeks before she found out she was pregnant.

And while the distraught couple had medical insurance, they don’t know yet whether it will cover all the treatment Daniel was given in his tragically short life.

As well as losing their son, the heartbroken parents could be left with a hefty medical bill and needing to fund a funeral.

The return fancy dress walk from Barnoldswick Library to the Langroyd pub in Colne on Sunday has been titled “Nine miles for nine days” and was the idea of Leanne’s former West Craven High school friend Nikita Smith, who lives in Colne now having grown up in Barnoldswick.

Nikita said: “I just want to help them out. I wanted to make the nine miles meaningful and wanted to have a goal.

“To be fair, it’s got a lot bigger than I thought which is a good thing. We’ve raised a bit of money and around 40 people have signed up but the more the merrier.

“I can’t imagine what they are going through. They are such lovely people.

“I can’t think of a couple more deserving of a child and it’s just been taken away from them.”

The walk starts at 9am at Barnoldswick Library and will finish at the Fountain Inn in Barlick after the journey from Colne.

Walkers can pick up sponsor forms from the Shambles and Elegant Hair and Nails in Barnoldswick and the Co-op food store in Colne.
