A remarkable woman – possibly the oldest person in Pendle – died after suffering a fall at home.
Mrs Aisha Bibi was 106-years-old when she fell down the stairs on September 8th last year at her home in Hibson Road, Nelson.
An inquest at Burnley Coroner’s Court heard how she was still very fit at the time of her accident.
Her grandson Mr Amar Shahzad said: “My grandmother was very fit and was on no medication at all.
“Earlier that day she had been reminiscing about happy times in her life.
“She was very independent and my parents, whom she lived with, had a chair-lift fitted at their home, which she refused to use.”
Mr Shahzad told the hearing that his grandmother had gone for her usual afternoon sleep. His mother had heard her go to the bathroom and then come downstairs, but suddenly heard a few loud bangs.
Mrs Bibi was found at the bottom of the stairs with a nasty head injury. She was rushed to the Royal Blackburn Hospital but sadly died at 10-30pm the same day.
Pathologist Dr Walid Salman, who conducted the post-mortem examination, said that her coronary arteries were “beautifully healthy” and gave the cause of death as a brain haemorrhage consistent with the fall.
East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor, who recorded a conclusion of accidental death, said the fall had “ended the life of a remarkable woman”.
