A young swimming star – six-year-old Braden Barraclough – has managed an impressive mile and raised around £700 for charity.

Braden, who lives in Fence and is a pupil at St Mary’s Primary School in Newchurch, is a member of Nelson Swimming Club and he went along to Pendle Wavelengths pool to make his effort to support the Autism and Dyspraxia Charity. He had to complete 64 lengths to make a mile. His mum Davina said: “He did really, really well. When he got to 58 lengths he said ‘My tummy hurts, Mummy’.

“He relaxed a bit but then completed the six more he needed to finish the mile.” She revealed he had risen around £700 for the charity and she said: “He’s been okay since - he has had no problems. He got out of the water okay.”

As well as his swimming club friends he was joined by family and friends including his godmother.

And to raise money for the charity he got a lot of support. His dad Danny works at Graham Engineering in Nelson. Mum Davina said: “A huge thank you to engineers on the shopfloor at Graham Engineering for their support.”

And she added: “Braden will get a certificate this week for swimming a mile.”
