Pendle MEP Dr Sajjad Karim has been nominated as the Parliament presidential candidate for the European Conservatives and Reformists group.
The former Pendle councillor, the Conservative Legal Affairs spokesman, has been at the forefront of the Conservatives reformist agenda in Europe, notably steering key reforms through the Parliament which have reduced EU red tape, introduced a new framework for EU legislation and increased national parliament powers.
The North West MEP was the first British Muslim to be elected to the Parliament in 2004 and was re-elected for a consecutive third term last month.
He currently holds chairmanship of the Advisory Committee on MEP Code of Conduct which seeks to shut down corrupt practices in the Parliament.
