Generous staff and students have been hard at work gathering canned and packaged goods for a Nelson food bank.

Donations were given to the St Philip’s Grassroots Centre, in Leeds Road, after collections were organised by Millie Green (14) and Lucy Ibbotson (14) at Colne Park High School.

The Grassroots Centre is run by volunteers and provides food parcels to last five days for either a single person or families identified as being in need of support.

Once they are given the food parcel, they are offered other support, such as job opportunity research, counselling,IT training and confidence building.

RE teacher Terri Taylor said: “The students chose this issue on the back of Sport Relief after watching a programme which focused upon poverty in the UK.”

And assistant care manager Sam Ogden added: “We are so pleased with this donation. It has come at the right time as we’d just run out of food.”

Both Millie and Lucy went into forms to talk about the food bank and how it would help families as part of their awareness drive.

Millie said: “We wanted to do something to help people in the community who are struggling and we thought collecting food for a food bank was a good idea.”

Students hope to collect and donate food to other food banks in the future.
