Pendle Council has agreed to try to increase the number of people in the borough who pay their council tax by direct debit.
A report to a meeting of the council’s Executive told members that just 62% of people pay their bills in this way, one of the lowest in the county. Only Preston, Burnley and Hyndburn have a lower figure, the report said. Chorley (80.2%) has the highest.
The council is hoping to increase the number of people paying by direct debit to 70% - more than 2,000 more people – over the next three years and has drawn up a campaign plan to help it achieve this target.
This includes targeting those who do not currently use direct debit and promoting the benefits of such payments through social media and emails.
The incentives will also include a voucher-based prize draw to encourage more people to take it up.
