Nelson’s SafeSpace has received an amazing donation of 19 new mattresses from Pendle bedmakers Silentnight for their homeless supported accommodation project in the town.
SafeSpace provides accommodation and support for young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or facing homelessness.
The project is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by staff and volunteers and addresses the wider issues of homelessness such as emotional wellbeing, education, training and employment; family issues and independent living skills as well as providing safe accommodation.
SafeSpace has been providing accommodation and support to homeless young people in Pendle for over 14 years.
This donation was facilitated by Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, Coun. Paul White and Coun. Lyle Davy. Both Coun. White and Coun. Davy visited SafeSpace back in March in preparation for their sleep-out in Barnoldswick Town Centre to raise awareness of youth homelessness.
During their visit they had the opportunity to meet with some of the young people and talk about their experiences and support that they have received from SafeSpace.
Following their visit, the councillors went on to facilitate discussions with Barnoldswick-based Silentnight, who were more than happy to support SafeSpace and made the offer of donating the 19 mattresses.
Claire Bennett, charity manager for Pendle Action for the Community, said: “This is a fantastic show of support from a locally-based business to a locally-based charity, and for that we are truly grateful.
“The young people who access our project have no alternative place to sleep and often no source of support at that time.
“Getting a good night’s sleep as we all know is so important on our ability to function and manage day-to-day difficulties and routines. Therefore for them to be able to experience a wonderfully comfortable night’s sleep on their first night with us and throughout their stay is something that is invaluable’ “
SafeSpace is a project managed by Pendle Action for the Community, a local charity which provides a variety of services to people in Pendle including family support services, support for adults and children affected by domestic abuse, counselling and life-skills services as well as prevention and awareness work regarding youth homelessness.
