Campaigners in Earby have welcomed the return of a road sign bearing the name of Britain’s most celebrated political leader more than 50 years after it disappeared.
Pendle Council installed the Churchill Avenue street sign as the original was never put back when war time prefabricated buildings were replaced by permanent houses on the Northolme Estate.
Members of Earby History Society and residents raised the issue following an exhibition remembering the estate, also known as “The Ranch”, in 2013.
Peter Dawson (86), of Rostle Top Road, worked as a builder on the estate in the early 1940s and expressed his delight at seeing the sign return.
He said: “We pushed for it because we felt it should be recognised again as Churchill Avenue.
“Working on the Northolme Estate was my first job. I left Alder Hill School at 14 on Friday, April 10th, 1942 and on the Monday I was working as a general labourer. They were built to house workers and was a walkable distance to Rolls-Royce at Barnoldswick. We also had a load of evacuees from London.”
