Physiotherapist Linda Middleton is coming back down to earth after two weeks at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games where she was treating gymnasts from all over the world.
Linda (48), from Earby, works at BMI Gisburne Park Hospital and described her experience as the “best thing I have ever done”.
Prior to travelling up to Scotland, Linda said she was over the moon to have gained a physio role in the gymnastics centre as it was her favourite sport and she’s already got her name down for the World Gymastic Championships which will also be held in Glasgow next year.
Linda said: “It was an amazing experience and the whole atmosphere was electric. As well as getting to know the gymnasts and their coaches I worked with an amazing medical team. We all got on really well and provided an excellent service for the athletes.”
Linda also had her moment in the spotlight, when she was called on to treat England gymnast Sam Oldham in front of the full glare of the TV cameras.
She said: “As Sam was taking his last vault in the men’s team competition he landed badly injuring his ankle.
“I was the first member of our team to be called on to help, but as the injury was quite serious I had to call for a doctor and radio for other members of my team to bring equipment.
“He was taken to a clinic based at the athletes village for a scan and further treatment. Thankfully it was only a bad sprain and he was able to collect his gold medal in the evening.”
But that wasn’t Linda’s only brush with fame as she got a snap with London Olympic pommel horse silver medallist and Strictly Come Dancing winner Louis Smith.
Linda added: “One day I was talking to Louis Smith when he offered to take a ‘selfie’ of us both on my phone, making the rest of my medical team green with envy.
“Watching the gymnastics at close quarters was very impressive, and all the competitors were totally dedicated to their sport.
“The atmosphere in Glasgow City was also brilliant with musicians and street entertainers from throughout the Commonwealth, it was one big international party.
“Everyone was very friendly and I was given accommodation by a fantastic local family who really made me feel at home.
“During the closing ceremony I was sad that it was all coming to an end, but I know I have some amazing memories and have made new friendships that will last a lifetime.”
